HOTA Gallery Acquisition | Elisa Jane Carmichael

November 8, 2023
Elisa Jane Carmichael ragi Onespace 18 August - 2 September 2023 installation views In late August, early September we present a very vibrant, short season of new work by acclaimed mid-career artist Elisa Jane Carmichael. Her exhibition, titled ragi, comprises 95 cyanotypes that celebrate the seasonal change on Minjerribah. Ragi, meaning ‘bush’ in jandai language, is a series of imagery stitched together using cyanotypes, wildflowers and talwalpin (cotton tree) threads. The textile installation captures the changes of plant life in the land and sands of Quandamooka ragi, blooming with the cycles of seasons and abundance.
We are delighted to announce that HOTA Gallery has acquired 10 artworks by Elisa Jane Carmichael from her recent exhibition, ‘ragi’.

It is fantastic to witness influential cultural institutions like HOTA Gallery supporting the creative development of Onespace artists. Gestures like these not only promote and showcase their invaluable practices, but also contribute to the enrichment of the Southeast Queensland art scene.HOTA Gallery shared their enthusiasm on the acquisition: “These sun-infused works resonate with Carmichael’s profound connection to Country, featuring a vibrant array of native flora delicately imprinted on cotton and adorned with embroidery of talwalpin (cotton tree) bark. We are thrilled to welcome these new additions into our collection and eagerly anticipate their enjoyment by the community.”
