Onespace is proud to congratulate Elisa Jane Carmichael, a recent recipient of a 2024 QUT Outstanding Young Alumnus Award for her contribution to First Nations Art and her unique ability to draw inspiration from her cultural identity and heritage.
The Outstanding Alumni Awards celebrate graduates of QUT and its predecessor institutions for exceptional professional and personal achievements, and contributions on a local, national, and global scale. The awards showcase and celebrate the diverse achievements, leadership, and impact of alumni who are influencers in their professions and communities.
Elisa’s contemporary exploration of Quandamooka weaving and her prolific oeuvre of cyanotypes are deeply embedded in cultural storytelling that reflect an inherent connection with her ancestors. Her practice explores the beauty of nature and surrounding environment, drawing inspiration from her Country, cultural identity and heritage.
Her innovative practice has led to her inclusion in several major national exhibitions such as the TarraWarra Biennial 2023, ua usiusi faʻavaʻasavili, Primavera at MCA (2021) and Tarnanthi at the Art Gallery of South Australia (2020). Her work has been exhibited in Busan, Canada, New Zealand, North America and the United Kingdom. Elisa is a three-time finalist in the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (2023, 2021, 2018) and her work is held in major collections both nationally and internationally, such as The British Museum, QAGOMA, Queensland Museum, NGV, QUT Art Museum, UQ Art Museum and the Griffith University Art Museum.
Her work has significantly entered the public realm, including public artworks at the Woolloongabba train station as part of the Cross River Rail Station Art Program, the Herston Quarter and Southbank Parklands, Brisbane.
Elisa Jane Carmichael holds a Master of Fine Arts from QUT.
