Onespace is very pleased to bring you Night Dwellers, an online exhibition of intimate and exquisite watercolours by Zoe Porter. Exploring a range of themes drawn from a curiosity in our complex relationships with the animal and non-human world, this exhibition showcases the outcome of Porter’s artistic residency at Hope St Studio, South Brisbane.
During the creation of this body of work in 2022-23, Porter’s process was greatly influenced by the vibrant and bustling atmosphere of Hope Street and Fish Lane in Brisbane’s ever-thriving cultural precinct. Night Dwellers continues Porter’s fascination with hybrid animal-human and plant-human forms, serving as a conduit to convey experiences of physical and psychological dislocation. These works reflect the interconnectedness between humans and the non-human world giving rise to the artist’s imaginative and mythological creatures that symbolise this profound connection.
Night Dwellers invites you to embark on a visual exploration of blurred boundaries between human and non-human, reality, and mythology. While working in the space, Porter assumed the role of observer, immersing herself in the environment and finding moments of retreat to focus intently on her artistic practice. This latest studio series continues to contemplate our place in the world and our relationship with our surrounding environment.
Zoe Porter’s Hope St residency was made possible through ARIA Property Group, Griffith University Art Museum, and the Queensland College of Art (QCA).
