Onespace warmly congratulates Elisa Jane Carmichael for her selection as a finalist for the 2025 Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (Telstra NATSIAA) for her work, ‘Threads that bind us,’ (2025). Selected from 216 entries, all finalist works will be exhibited at MAGNT, Darwin, until 26 January 2026.
Using cyanotype printing on eugaires, gara, ungarie, Talwalpin and juru scales, ‘Threads that bind us,’ (2025) encompasses themes of people and place on Quandamooka Country. These flowing strings are woven together into sculptural adornments that are worn on the body, strung from shoulder to shoulder. Using materials harvested on Country in Minjerribah North Stradbroke Island, this work serves to strengthen the continuous thread that binds Country, to the seas and to the Ancestral skies, holding memories of ceremony and spirit.
Elisa Jane states, “This bond is grounded in Country and is unbreakable. These strings weave Ancestral hands into the present. The thread that binds us is Country.”
Spanning categories from bark painting and sculpture to multimedia and works on paper, Telstra NATSIAA captures the diversity and innovation of today’s Indigenous artists. The prestigious Telstra Art Award was awarded to Gaypalani Waṉambi. Congratulations to Gaypalani and all the category award winners.
