Onespace Onsite 1 – REI + WERNER
Two a
rtists, two weeks, one shared gallery space, and an exhibition closing party conversation to celebrate.
Onespace Gallery is pleased to announce the first in a series of our dual practitioner engagements to investigate the installation possibilities of our gallery and the conflation of the work of the two artists engaged. ‘Onespace Onsite’ creates a platform in plain view for the engagement of two artists in a shared gallery space to investigate as they will.
Our inaugural artists – Elysha Rei + Benjamin Werner – are two active exhibition artists whose work frequently segues into the public domain and non-gallery spaces via public art commissions and installations. Their joint project for Onespace Onsite extends their investigation into the dichotomy of light and dark spaces. Rei + Werner will be creating works in response to their urban environments as Brisbane artists. Paper, paint and pattern will all play a key part in the materiality of this experiment between both practitioners.
Please join us in conversation and celebration with the artists for the Exhibition Closing Party – 16th March 2017.
About the artists
Elysha Rei is a Japanese-Australian visual artist whose work draws upon her mixed heritage and transition between places, cultures and communities. With a curiosity to examine her identity within a Japanese aesthetic, Rei’s work uses symbolic animals, plants and patterns. By placing these natural elements within new environments, she aims to question notions of ‘tradition’ and attachment to ‘place’, creating visual interpretations of her cross-cultural experiences. Rei’s work includes paper cutting, portraits and public art installations, which have been exhibited across Australia and internationally over the past 12 years.
Benjamin Werner is a Brisbane based artist whose work explores light as well as subtracted and additive colour theories to develop artworks revolving around urban city life. His most recent body of work exhibited oil paintings, LED’s, ceramics and a large scale acrylic and light installation of thousands of laser cut transparent circles experimenting with light and colour. Benjamin holds large solo exhibitions with critical publications and his work is held in many public, private and corporate collections including City of Brisbane collection and Mater Mothers Hospital. He has and continues to work with many art museums and galleries on the exhibitions or collection teams including Museum of Brisbane, GOMA, QAG, QUT Art Museum, William Robinson Gallery and travels annually to Art Basel Hong Kong to also work on exhibition teams.
