Agency Projects

KNOWN is a series of publications that promotes and celebrates contemporary Indigenous Australian artists, facilitating cross-cultural dialogue between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and writers. KNOWN elevates and amplifies First Nations voices; strengthening cultural knowledge, language, and artistic engagement. The KNOWN series is designed to foster knowledge exchange within communities and acknowledges contemporary Indigenous Australian artists on both national and international stages…

KNOWN engages in critical discussion of each artist’s work creating a dynamic dialogue of cross-cultural exchange between First Nations artists and curators. The series references intercultural collaborations and provides context to the places artists live and work, some of whom live on Country and some of whom may not be afforded that privilege.

Featured artists include:

Marrnyula Mununngurr (Djapu woman and artist from Yirrkala, Northeast Arnhem Land) with words by Dr. Maia Nuku (Maori / Ngai Tai woman and curator of Oceanic Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)

Pedro Wonaeamirri (Tiwi artist from Melville Island, Northern Territory) with words by Brook Andrew (Wiradjuri artist and curator)

Sonja and Elisa Jane Carmichael (Ngugi/Quandamooka women, master weavers and artists from Stradbroke Island, Queensland) with words by Katina Davidson (Kullilli/Yuggera woman and curator of Indigenous Australian Art at Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane)

The project has been funded through philanthropic donations, Creative Australia, and the Indigenous Languages and Art (ILA) Program, Office for the Arts, which supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians to express, preserve and maintain their cultures through languages and arts activities around Australia.
