Darren Blackman | 15 Artists | Redcliffe Art Gallery

March 25, 2025

Onespace congratulates Darren Blackman on his inclusion in 15 Artists, currently on show at Redcliffe Art Gallery until 24 May. 15 Artists is an annual acquisitive prize providing the winner, announced on Friday 2 May, with a cash prize of $20,000 with their work acquired into the City of Moreton Bay’s Art Collection.

Wry and politically charged in its content, Truth Hurts, is a neon pink text-based work that Darren likens to sculpture, exploring a new artistic direction in his practice. It draws inspiration from philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer’s assertion that, “All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.”

Darren suggests that “The Commonwealth of Australia shares the one true history, that has uniquely affected and influenced contemporary Australian lifestyle and attitudes. Accepting that history has proved to be Australia’s greatest challenge. The truth hurts.”

Exhibition dates: 1 March – 24 May
Winner announcement: Friday 2 May
