As the first exhibition of our 2020 program, we are delighted to present rightNOW – a selection of works fresh from the studios of four Australian artists – two emerging; one mid-career and one established:
- Jordan Azcune
- Michael Barnett
- Fintan Magee
- Nicola Scott
This show is the second iteration of rightNOW curated by Onespace Gallery and the four artists are either based in Brisbane or have a connection to our city. Onespace Gallery Director, John Stafford said, ‘the ‘rightNOW’ model, seeks to transition very recently completed works straight from artists’ studios to our gallery walls. Often artists have to wait for a curated show, or a programmed solo to get their ideas out into the world. The rightNOW exhibition approach presents works to collectors and curators in a more immediate way. On many occasions their works remain in the studio indefinitely. We thought the rightNOW approach was perfect to ‘break in’ our new gallery walls and launch our exciting new space.’
As catalogue essayist Louise Martin-Chew suggests of the show:
“rightNOW” offers hard currency in terms of the new. This exhibition feeds the human need to know and absorb what this moment means – arbitrated through the freshest of paint, visioned by the artist. These artworks invite us in, narrating a story of our times that is at odds with those we may receive via more mainstream channels. Yet, even as these works express the kernel of these artists’ personally informed views, they tap into the universal to share imaginative possibilities.
