Zoe Porter
Umiama

4 - 28 September 2019

Umiama is a solo exhibition by Zoe Porter that explore depictions of hybrid forms and in-between zones through an interdisciplinary approach. This new body of work was inspired by a research trip and residency to Toba, Japan and focuses heavily on the local Ama (female free-divers). The ama have been recorded as early as 5,000 years ago and currently their numbers are dwindling yet this ancient tradition is still continued today. These new works reference photographs taken by the artist, historical documentation of the Ama as well as illustrations of the traditional sea-folk and their practices in the Ukiyo-e.
