Onespace proudly presents Karen Mills, When The Spear Grass Turns Golden Brown, launching this July. Mills practice explores themes of identity, connection and disconnection with her heritage. A descendant of the Balangarra peoples of the Oombulgurri and Forrest River reserve in East Kimberley, Western Australia, her works are inspired by memories of Country. She describes her paintings as “lyrical landscapes of memory,” using tactile and abstracted forms which reflect the deeply embodied connections to Country carried on by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Capturing this rich history and endurance of cultures, Mills paintings weave these connections into every layer of the canvas, working slowly and responding intuitively to each brushstroke.
