In Unsettled Ground, Sebastian Di Mauro reflects on the contradictions of Australia as a modern nation that continues to cling onto imperial symbols. Australia’s ongoing allegiance to the British monarchy reveals a lingering colonial mindset that sits at odds with its contemporary multicultural identity. Through hand-embroidered textiles and detailed watercolours, Sebastian reflects on the arrival of British colonisers and their attempts to overwrite the laws and traditions of First Nations peoples. In a country shaped by many cultures, the persistence of a distant monarch as head of state feels increasingly out of place. Unsettled Ground asks why Australia continues to hold onto inherited power and invites us to imagine a future defined on our own terms.
